Moisei has been a commune in Maramureș County since 1213, making it one of the oldest such communes in Romania. The village takes its name from nearby monastery which was founded in 1672 and has become a popular tourist attraction drawing visitors from around the world to see this historic site.

UNESCO declared the Moisei massacre site a World Heritage Monument in 2007. The Hungarian Army killed 39 Romanians and 3 Jews on October 14, 1944. There is now a monument to the victims of this event which was built by sculptor Gheza Vida in 1965.
